I'm reading conflicting information on this - does it send the signal to the amp as well as letting the headunit control the amps setup?

if you are referring to the remote, no, you still need one i believe.

No the pre-out signal.

Have you used the amp link feature?

i never got to use mine, had to sell the amp before i could get the v-link. Yes you will still need the pre-out. All the link does is allow you to control your settings from the HU.
