I think they are one and same? I checked the Alpine site and can locate the user manual for the CDA-9835 but not for anything listed as the CDA-9835R.

The 9835 is the American version. The 9835R is the European version. You'll have more FM stations, even though we don't have anything over here to use those bands. You'll also get RDS on that one, which is a rather nice feature. If I could find a 9835R/9855R, I'd buy that up quickly.
