Alpine 7998 sounds like crap.... please help!!

Just installed a Alpine 7998 and a Alpine F540 amp to replace some

equipment that was stolen out of my car a while back. I love the

look and features of 7998, but it sounds terrible and I can't figure

out why.

The sound is thin and lifeless, lacking mids and lows. Highs are

shrill and actually hurts my ears to turn it up above moderate volumes.

I've checked and double checked the speaker polarity and phasing and

all is correct there. I've tried every combination of settings I can think

of in the time correction, bass focus and EQ with no joy. Media expander

sometimes helps, but mostly makes it sound worse. The audio source

doesn't matter, FM radio, CD, MP3, XM... it all sounds like crap.

What am I doing wrong?? I've got to be overlooking something simple.

These same speakers sounded fine behind a Alpine 7949 (which was

stolen), so I don't think it is the speakers.

adjust the bass setting yet?

make sure you don't have the headunit High Pass anything.(they come with high pass filter if you didnt' notice). set it to "off". thats all i can think of right now.

Hi... Thanks for the info...

Unless I'm missing something, this unit doesn't have

an adjustment for bass or treble... I just took another

spin through the Owners manual, and it looks like Alpine

expect you to use the EQ for that.

I'll double-check the crossover settings. I'm pretty

sure they are set to flat (off).

What speakers are they, and how do you have the amp set up. What crossover points are you using

The speakers are Infinity Kappa 52i's up front, and Kicker 690i's in the

back. I want to add some subs but want to get this sorted out

first.

The filters and crossovers on the amp are all turned off, in order

to send full range to the speakers.

Not using any crossovers in the HU either... all flat (off)

I would first set some crossover points for the speakers. Anything above 80hz about. Anything below there will sound bad. Play with the EQ, tone down the top band if the highs are piercing.
