Okay, so based on that chart, as I suspected, a three or four foot length of 4 gauge cabling could be fused at 150 amps from the alternator to the battery, Its fused a little high considering the alternator only produces 130 amps, but the cable should be able to withstand that draw.
Well today I smelled something, so I popped the trunk, and everything seemed fine
I then proceeded to look under the hood and this is what i saw.
I am at a loss to figure this out.
At the same time as removing this, I also discovered that the fuse i put in line in the place of a fusible link, was blown. However, the car was driving up until the point that I cut that cable , so its possible I blew it accidently. I put in a new fuse and it was fine.
I took the precaution of cutting the cable out, as I was unsure if it was shorting somewhere.
However, I still do not feel that it should have melted the cable, it should have blown that fuse, right?
It was a Tsunami 150 amp mini anl fuse, and same brand holder. Looking in at the fuse, all the plastic came off the metal, but the fuse itself remains intact. I do not see anywhere where it was shorting; and up until this, I haven't had any wierd electrical problems.
Other info: I have upgraded the big three (well just two now I guess since this is pooched, using 4 gauge cabling. I have two 4 gauge cables running to the trunk, as thats what I had from previous installs, so I used it again, and a second battery in the trunk. The place I was iffy about the 150 amp fuse, was on one of the cables running the length of the car; due to the length of the run. One is fused at 150 and the other at 80 since I haven't bought a nother mini anl holder.
Any ideas?
