I recently bought and installed my first stereo system in my truck, so im pretty new to car audio. I have a MTX JH600 1 ch amp with a Kicker L5 12". When trying to adjust the gain for the first time, I was setting it to 2V to match my deck output. The sub sounded like it was overpowered and i didnt want to ruin it so i turned it back down to about 4V. the amp was originally all the way down at 5V, and the sub didnt sound loud enough like that. I have the sub adjustments turned up pretty high, not too loud, and the instructions for the MTX amp said to have the power knob on the amp remote all the way up when adjusting the gain.
Since I turned the gain up, there was at first a little bit of a smell coming from the sub vent...almost like a burning smell. I just did all this tonight so i cant say its been doing it for long, but it still smells a little in the vent. Is this a problem? Did i damage the sub at all?
Also, to get the most out of my amp, should i turn the gain to 2v to match my deck, but turn the sub adjustments down to keep this from happening again? Please help this is my first time doing this
