My Supercharged 3.8 Does ok in the cty, avg 19-20 and I beat on it pretty regularly. 24-25 HWY. You will be hard pressed to find any 8 Cylinder near 20 in the city. My dads 67 Nova only gets 12, and the 70 Cutlass about 10:)

My 5.7 V-8 (LO5) has done as well as 27.2 MPG on the highway. I made sure to have the gas tanke crammed full before and after to ensure an accurate consumption measurement.

My friend has a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 4.6 V-8. On the highway I had it as high as 29 MPG for a 45 mile stretch and that was babying it as much as possible. His mixed MPG with some cold engine miles thrown in run around 23.

The real surprise for the cars I have owned over the years was the 1969 Olds 98 I had back in 1976. Equipped with a 455 V-8 that was high compression and burned premium, I drove it 100 miles exactly and used 5 gallons exactly, with me babying it for the trip to wind up with 20 MPG. Driven normally it got 18.5 MPG. If this car had today's fuel injection, computer management systems, an overdrive automatic and a rear end gearing for maximum economy, one could make a case for over 25 MPG from a 455 V-8...LOL!

V-8's can be rather thrifty for gas consumption while delivering the power when you need it. The worst thing is to have no power and bad MPG. Some V-6's are just plain overworked and they **** the gas like nobody's business, especially in heavier vehicles like pickups, vans and SUV's. Some of those underpowered vehicles will weigh more than my 1991 Cadillac Brougham and that just kills the fuel economy.

If we had the right V-8's with hybrid tech, we could easily see 30 MPG on the highway for largish heavy vehicles is my guess plus the city MPG's would be decent, perhaps around 20? Small engines don't always equal a small gas bill.

my turbo V6 Buick gets about 23-25 around town when taking it easy and can run 12's in the 1/4 so not to bad...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

My buddy has a 2001 camaro with the LS1 and he gets around 28mpg on the highway, and the car hauls ***.

I had a 2006 mustang with the 4.6 and could get 24 or 25 on the hwy if I absolutely babied it. But it was a slow turd.

Very nice dude! Wish I could afford something that nice. Have to go the older route for better insurance/buying price.

I totally agree! Thanks for chiming in!

Seriously considering an LS1 now. Always like those generation gm's but thought they were worse than that on gas.

I have a 1998 Mustang with a 3.8 and I only get about 11-13 MPG. It blows Im lucky to get 150 miles out of a full tank. I do have a ton of stuff in it tho.

Sorry to thread jack, but I think its crazy. I got the car new in 98 and it got around 300 miles to the tank no prob. Needless to say, I don't drive it that often these days.
