Acoustically Transparent Carpet

I have a 2001 Honda CRV and I am mounting 2 10 inch subs in the rear tub that exists in the trunk. When all i said and done, I am going to remove the original OEM trunk liner and replace it with acoustically transparent carpet which will hold up under normal wear and tear. Something that transparent cloth won't do a good job at. Just wondering if you guys could recommend a few choices for me. I saw that there are a few companies such as stinger that sell trunk liner that doesn't have any backing but was wondering what that would do to the sound.

If you are curious the subs are going to have plenty of room to move because they are flush mounted and i am using another sheet of mdf to cover and level the entire trunk area and it will also have a cutout for the subs. The hole/rectangle will be covered with a perforated metal grill that I am getting from a local sheet metal shop. My problem is the acoustic carpet to cover the entire trunk. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Erik

How the **** can carpet be acoustically transparent, that's completely against it's purpose. I can understand transparent grill cloth, but carpet? Think about it, that cannot be possible. Air cannot pass through carpet readily, and all that sound is is air particles moving against one another. If air can't get through, sound can't get through (which is exactly why carpeting is the single most important item in a home theatre).

My friend used it when he competed, however, I have not been able to get a hold of him, so it exists. And yes without the backing bass should be able to sound just fine going through it. Its the same type of material used to carpet boxes

I was planning to fiberglass a sub in the wheel well. So if I use this for the carpet floor, it should have no effect on my the sound where the cutout for my sub is (like grill cloth)?

Im trying to make sub low enough so that after excursion it is still slightly under the floor (I want the floor completely flat and look stock).

There are different types of carpet there, cool guy. Acoustic carpet is the theatre stuff and it absorbs sound. Acoustically transparent carpet lets sound pass through it. Its used where a grill or trim panel is going to be covered with carpet to match the surrounding panels and also needs to allow the speaker behind it to play through. Very useful in stealth installs and was used fairly readily in the 80's and 90's. Most unbacked automotive carpet is fairly transparent to sound.

ARSKemp, I am doing exactly what you are asking about. I have fiberglassed the tub of the crv and I will have a board with 2 10's flush mounted. Then I will be adding another 3/4'' mdf board that is contoured to what the trunk looks like with a cutout in the center to allow the subs to throw without hitting the top piece. Then I will get a sheet metal grill and place over the top board, and cover the entire 3/4'' mdf with carpet so it looks stock. Stealth, cherry. Installed!
