I think the key is making your kid earn the extra stuff. Reward a good report card with an action figure or a night at chucky cheese. Give the kid chores to earn an allowance so he can learn what things cost and how to save for stuff he wants. Make the kid get a job as soon as possible and make him put a portion of his check away for college. There are tons of ways to foster the right kind of mentality, but forcing a Christian Children's Fund budget on a child isn't a great choice.

I dont think there is a key, or a magical way to raise your child.

I'm definitely not saying that flip would be a bad father, or is preparing to raise his child wrong. I'm simply saying that i do not entirely agree with it, although i see the merit to his views.

I dont think parenting should be about making sure your child is ready to survive the next depression or nuclear holocaust. If your child is intelligent and robust enough they will survive and be just fine.

Perhaps, pehaps. I guess I will have to actually have kids before I can really take this on. I will have to think more on this later.

There isn't a magical way to raise a kid, no. But I think those are all ways to make sure a kid won't end up feeling entitled to everything. Worked for me anyway. I think the big problem Flip is struggling with is that the lessons he (and many of the rest of us) learned as a kid were the product of necessity. It is a difficult situation when you want your kid to be happy with a Honda when you could buy him a Maserati (just an example).

I have grown up around kids who were raised the wrong way (lived in a tourist town where almost everyone's parents owned a hotel or water park or whatever). I have seen first hand the effects that Flip is fearing. I just think there are easier ways to avoid those effects than relegating your child to an 80-cents-a-day life.

I think your views will change a lot if/when you have a kid. Emotions become much more powerful than statistics.
