AB 400.1 problems

One of my friends was having problems with her American Bass 400.1 starting about 3 weeks ago. She said it would play for about 10-15 minutes then just shut off. (she knows nothing about audio except she likes it) so I kept telling her to bring it by the next chance she got, I finally made her come over tonight. The amp won't even power up. It immediately goes to protect mode once the HU powers up.

Amp is wired to 4 ohms and has been since September 5th

All connections were secure

Amp is probably toast, just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas about it.

13.9 at the amp and the equivalent of four batcap 2000's in the car

sometimes if a sub is damaged it will cause the amp to go into protect.

ok, I'll pull my amp out and see if it works on mine. I didn't want to mess with it if it was going to be more hassle than it's worth

just remembered something...before I unhooked the amp, I unhooked the speaker leads to see if it went into protect without anything hooked to it and it did

toast?

Are you sure it's wired to 4ohms? Check it with a DMM to make sure.

I did, 2 subs, 2.1 ohms each = 4.2 ohms

still taking ideas of what it could be

also taking offers on the blown amp, might consider repairing it as well if someone wants to try to explain what's wrong with it/how much it will cost to repair

Its hard to just say what could be wrong with it without looking at the amp and testing it with a oscilloscope. There is so many things that could be causing this problem like the power supply and output fets, IC chips, filters, gates and the list goes on. I'll buy it if she lets it go for a reasonable price. I bet she has a stock electrical in her vehicle causing low voltage and it cooked the power supply.

that was my guess. she's got the battery bank to back it, but stock alternator with the big 3 upgrade. Not done by me, all previous work was done by another guy. I just get to troubleshoot now.

What puzzles me about that is that for the last 7-8 months it's been running with a 4 ohm load and she's got her kid in the back seat over half the time, so the head unit rarely passes 25% volume.

I'll pm you, but I'm still not sure what is the best route to go with this
