It is install dependent, how many and what kind drivers you plan to use, and what type of enclosure. I think its pretty safe to say most people will say the bigger the better in a ported box for SPL.
10, 12, 15, 18 of the same type woofer, same model just different size, will pretty much give you the same sq, the only different is a bigger sub is capable of moving more air
I always thought four 10s in the right box w/ the right power sounds bad ***, and hits haaaaaaard, but say 2 18's is just deeeeep as ****. Why is that?

my dealer did four treo ssi 10"s in a tahoe with a c2k 9.0 on them. that thing got down and dirty. he also did a truck with two ssx 15"s in it (cut through), and that was just nasty. that thing just messes with your brain. two 9.0's in that one, but that is a different story.
two 18"s probably had a lot more moving mass than the 10"s did. and if they didnt have as much power, that could cause them to be a little lower and not as tight. it all comes down to power, enclosure, and woofer design when you get different sounds like that.
