Yes because it will be giving you a reading based on the wrong type of measurement.
Akin to using a ruler that reads in centimeters but needing measurements in inches and making the cuts anyway based on the marks on the wrong ruler.

ya.....there's seperate plugs for measureing current and measureing voltage....when measureing current the leads are connected on the inside...which essentially is like taking a piece of wire and crossing the speake routputs when it's in full tilt with no protections circuit...pooof.... the other plug for voltage doesnt have that problem since its made to be hooked up in parallel like that....but haveing the dmm on the wrong setting but the right plug will only have you taking a chance on hurting the dmm (such as if the voltage range was something small and you read something with a signifigantly higher voltage range)

no not totally safe...u can still run your amp into clipping and hurt he sub.....just do the math and figure out how much volatge you wanna send it it....then tune it.... honestly most of the time u can hear the sub become slightly more distorted and move unlinear when you start clipping....you COULD tune it by ear that way by finding that spot and turning it downa lil from there...but a dmm is the safest way...just tune it till it sounds good , then use a dmm, see where you're at with the voltage....do some math and see see if thats a relativly hwere you wanna be as far as watts... thats one way to do it...

i was always led to believe that you set your gains acording to what volts your head deck puts out, i've never had a problem with clipping. im gonna try the dmm method and see what differences i notice. and also see what it says to set the gain to this way. i wonder how different the result will be?

Thanks for the help Addict, I was more concerned/wondering if I could damage my amp if I touch the DMM to the terminals and it's on the wrong setting, not talking about hurting the sub but could I hurt the amp in any way setting gains?
