Question, and 880 rant..

Had my 880 for about 6 months now. Love it. Question is regarding the auto EQ. I've heard some refer to this option as being some sort of auto RTA? What exactly is a RTA? I've heard strong opinions both for it, and against it. I personally love the way it adds richness and fullness. I'm often not able to turn the volume up, or get the speakers as "loud" with auto eq enabled, but that full-range sound it gives me is music to my ears. I also find it fairy quirky sometimes to set correctly (I attribute this a good bit to the quality of the mic). Seems like a change in outside temperature +/- 10 degrees will make the levels set 1-3 clicks apart with multiple attempts. I've recently put all my 4 chan power to my fronts (CDT 61-A's) with about 200w per side while I get the materials together for my Rainbow SLC install. I've had to be REALLY careful after setting the auto eq with this setup, as the frequencies still need adjusted a little to keep the mids from bottoming out. Though volume is still not excruiciatingly "loud" auto eq'ed, even with 200 per side, the added full range sound I'm getting is frick'in incredible. In addition I have time alignment set to my drivers seat, decent EQ curve set, BMX at 1, BBE at 0. I can't wait to hear my Rainbows installed with proper deadening. I just hope I will be able to get the most out of auto eq with these new speakers.

I was never a fan of the auto EQ function with the Pioneer units that I had. Too much boost in certain frequencies is what they always introduced, instead of cutting the offensive bands. I would use it more like a starting point.

With the Eclipse units I've had, the same is true..... when I went on-line and let the system do the auto correction, it over boosted some bands. I've given these settings a shot, but once I uploaded them into the HU I did not like them. Good thing about the Eclipse method is that I can actually see the snapshot of my system and see the problem areas on the computer, and then use a little EQ'ing to tackle those spots.

So I could basically still use the auto eq for what its worth, then eq some of the over boosted frequencies down a bit manually. Still trying to figure out exactly how the auto eq works. Once its set, it starts you off with a flat eq that can be adjusted from there.

I didnt like the auto eq. I end up running my 880 verry close to flat with every gadget set to off on it.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

RTA is Real Time Analyzer. Follow this link for a pretty indepth explination. We had an RTA at the audio shop I worked at but it was too large to drag into cars. It looked something like the pic below, kinda makes you feel good that your HU has it eh //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. although not as accurite as the machine below of course. There are better option now to get accuracy compared to the machine below but they are not cheap.

RSA3308A DC-8 GHZ SPECTRUM ANALYZER, CERTIFICATE OF TRACEABLE CALIBRATION STANDARD US$ 36,400.00

RSA6114A REAL TIME SPECTRUM ANALYZER; 9 KHZ - 14 GHZ, 40 MHZ CAPTURE BW. CERTIFICATE OF TRACEABLE CALIBRATION STANDARD WITH PRODUCT. US$ 75,900.00

I could have told you that. I was going to buy an oscilliscope so I could visually see clipping but.......same situation for the most part

Leaving the EQ on flat does not necessarily mean you are getting a flat reponse within the vehicle. There are different materials inside of a car that can either abosorb or reflect sound.

I've noticed that BBE and BMX tend to over compensate the lowend quite a bit. I do leave the loudness feature on, but when I turn on either of the other two functions, the lowend gets to be way too over bearing, and my 7" peerless mids run into their limits rather quickly.

To be honest with you, those feature are cool at lower volumes but once you start to turn the volume up they become too much. Also, I find it that the music sounds good w/o them anyway.

Reason I never use the loudness feature. When I had my Pioneer unit I always left the loudness and BMX features off. I did use BBE, but I think it was on the -2 and -3 settings. I do wish my current HU had BBE....

The best place to get Oscilloscope cheap is a electronics swap meet or find an Amateur Radio Convention/Swap meet. You can get decent ones for $10-$15 bucks...
