7998 skipping. IS it a POS??

This morning my CDA-7998 started skipping all the CD's that I put to play at any volume. The skipping is not that bad but very annoying. About every five seconds into the music it skips a bit. I tried cleaning it with a CD cleaning device but no luck. Is there anyway it can be fixed??

I wouldn't blame the deck unless you have it mounted at the correct angle and have it secured in the dash and not just flopping around. It could also be that there was some condensation on the laser eye, does it still do it once the car has warmed up some?

It could also be the CD's that you are putting in it, are they scratched, marred, dirty at all?

Does it do it on all CD's or just ones that are ripped from your PC? Mine is fussy sometimes with some cheaper CD-R's where I have to remove them and reinsert for them to work consistently.

I would have to hit a huge pit of a pothole to make mine skip!

You did not provide a whole lot for details but I cannot image the laser is in need of alignment, and those cleaning discs don't do a good job of cleaning the lens and can sometimes make things worse. You need to remove the top cover and clean the laser eye properly with a 100% cotton swab.

I second pretty much everything that frzninvt said. My 7998 MAYBE has skipped 2-3 times in the 3 years that I've had it. It's always been very reliable for me.

It just started doing that yesterday. The car is parked with vehicle off and skips like crazy. I put a brand new original cd in there and it still skips it.

Ive had this unit for about a year now and It sucks to see it messing up like that.

** today on my way to work I got so frustrated that i punched it and now the motorized face doesnt work properly!! It wont close or open. I have to force it open. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

You should have just yanked it and sent it in for service which could have been done for $85 or less to go right through it. However, now that you have damaged the transport it will cost more and may never work correctly. You might wait until the Alpine 9887 comes out this summer it might be close in performance to the 7998, and then again maybe not.
