well guys its time to upgrade the audio in my old school honda civic, the car only came with 4in speakers in the dash. im very limited on what to do bc im not wanting to cut anything. so i will be putting either some 6x9 or some 6.5 components in a box and sitting them on the rear shelf. was just wanting some opinions on the best way to go.

A do not put speakers in a box on your rear deck...it looks bad and is as good as a stealme sticker. B Think about upgrading your front stage first. Is there anything other than those 4in dash speakers? You should really look into a pair of 6.5in components for the front and finding somewhere to mount them. I understand your desire to not cut anything, but if you have a desire for good sound quality you should reconsider cutting, or making a mount or kick enclosure for some 6.5s up front. While I do support making enclosures for your rear deck, I highly advise finding a way to enclose them from underneath the deck. Do you have anything else in mind for your system? do you have an aftermarket HU, or amplifier that you plan on using for your speakers, or is there a sub in the future?

My vote is for the kick panels. That way you don't have to fabricate anything yourself or cut anything, and you will be able to use some bigger components and have a decent front stage. Then you can get whatever for the rear when you have time.

its an 1983 civic hatch, I would love to put them in a kick panel but the room is so small i dont think it would fit and it would have o be a custom job bc no one makes them, as far as the front goes my only other choice is cutting holes in the door panel, and im starting to debate that so i might just go that route, right now i have some kicker 4in in the dash, but as you could imagine its just not enough. right now i have a few decks both old school one is an eclipse one is rockford fosgate, i went with the eclipse for now. and yes i will prolly amp them in the near future.

There are a couple of options for very shallow 6" drivers if you can put them in or on top of the doors in tiny sealed enclosures. Put in some beefy 4" mids in the dash and some tweeters and you have a 3-way set.
