640 SQUARE FOOT OF DEADENING, Complete Two Tone, HUNDEREDS of LEDs (2001 Maxima)

Alright, time for tonight's experiment...

in the past, I have used 20k MCD LEDs (5mm) for my interior lights. They put out a tremendous amount of light, but as with anything, why not try for more, amirite? BEHOLD, THE 10MM LED. Now, there's a difference...the traditional 5mm LED will draw about 20mA...these beasts draw a whopping 100mA and provide a STAGGERING 360,00MCD.

Note the thickness of the posts...from what I can see, there appears to be an SMD on the inside, or a massive deposit of phosphorous.

I can't just pull the posts through, either. Time for some drilling. This is for the maplight, LOL.

Here's the interior lights all prepped in the boards, sans resistors, diodes, and regulators.

My order from Mouser came in, TIME FOR A TEST RUN. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

BOOM. THESE THINGS ARE AWESOME!!!!

I like the overkill on the deadener, but the lights are just too much. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif You'll look like a mobile lighthouse rolling with all that on. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Nice work though!

Alright, spent some time finishing everything up. Now, what you see here is a nearly-comlpeted assembly. I am using 0.5W resistors w/ a Zener Diode - the diode should stop the reverse flow of current that occurs in the doors that causes them to remain lit even when the circuit is closed. That'd be big news for all of us, so I'm hoping it does the trick.

Next step is a slathering of LIQUID ELECTRICAL TAPE on the rear. I'm going to let that dry and solder the voltage regulator. It's a real b1tch to do this w/o a board as the pins are hella close and need 4 wires.

Here we see the finished product sand heatsink. Working with the liquid tape was a nightmare and the bristles for the brush are anything but easy to work with.

Now let's fire it up!

Now, let's compare output. I am going to compare regulated vs. unregulated output. Looking at it now, I should have put the diode on the incoming path of the regulator as I am losing 1.7V, but I am not going to lose sleep over it. There is a notable difference, but still bright as hell. Note: this is NOT a direct comparison as my distance from the garage door differed between tests.

UNREGULATED / REGULATED
