500 RMS sub suggested to be powered at 300 RMS? Mistake?

I've been researching and shopping subwoofers for the past week and this has really been throwing me off. I've always understood RMS ratings to be the amount of wattage that SHOULD be powered to the woofers (within 10% or so) for best sound quality and output. This JL Audio W3 12 inch sub has 500 watts RMS rating but the image shows that it should be powered at 300 and 500 is in the "danger zone". Somebody please tell me this is a mistake lol

it's probably the chart for a smaller diameter sub.

it's fine on 500rms.

i wouldn't worry too much about it, the extra clean 200wrms wont hurt or diminish performance..

just use caution when adjusting gains, and/or using bass-boost type features..

and OP, yeah youll be ok, but anything much past 500rms is pushing that sub. JL subs are very finicky with power.

Cool thanks all. I'm think I'm going to get a Hifonics Brutus 1200.1 D Monoblock amp to power 2 of those. It will be at 2 ohms supplying each sub 450 watts. Does this sound like a good setup? Cabin space is quite small.

If you are going with a sound quality sub put a better amp on them. Atleast one that will do rated before 10% THD

What does this mean? And what are some better quality for sound brands for 500 watt subs?

Put what in? My subs? I thought all you had to factor was amps and subs... What do I need to know about boxes?

0 gauge to dist block then 4 gauge to whatever amp. Stock alt kinetic 1400 battery. I need preferably an 800 to 1000 watt amp

The amp says less than .1% thd... Isn't a really low # a good thing? I don't understand what you're saying

if ur on a budget go grab an ap1300 or ap 1500. Neither are good sq amps but they are not to many cheap sq amps out there

the hifonics will kill anything audiopipe has.

soundstream rubicon series. is best budget sq I know of.
