I plan on painting the entire box gloss black. I've got some primer made for wood and a few cans of gloss black. First I will sand the mdf on all the spots that need touchup. Then I'm gonna hafta do a pretty heavy coat of primer and sand with 400 grit then do about 3 coats of gloss black while sanding in between each then finish off with 2 coats of clear and lightly wetsand with 600 grit in between each clear coat.

Here is the old thread...

Let me know if you guys have any input on what I'm doing right now.

I've never painted a mdf box before so if you guys know of a better way please let me know.

Thanks!

On the wood edges, make sure to use some wood filler or bondo like previously stated. The grain ends really absorb everything and will make it look ghetto. I didn't do this when I tried to stain my enclosure and the grain took about 15 coats of polyurethane (maybe even more; I wasn't counting) and was still absorbing it.

You can see what I mean in this pic:

The primer may help but it may just absorb it as well.

Thanks for the info and posting that pic of the box you stained with polyurethane, I'll definitely hit up the cut edges with either some type of bondo or wood filler.

I'm probably gonna do alot more primer then what I expected to do since it seems to not be absorbing into the mdf near as much as the paint does.

What exactly is "wood filler" or "bondo" how can I make it or where can I buy it?

Something like this:

Elmers has some for a couple bucks at walmart. It's labeled as a stainable wood filler. All you have to do is smear it on the ends, let it dry, and then lightly sand it smooth. I did this on a spare board and it worked great but it was already too late for my enclosure.

nice box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

was that stained box MDF or Baltic Birch?

either way, it looks great except for that endgrain //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

you should hit it with a belt sander to bring it down to bare wood, seal the endgrain and redo the stain... it should look nice when you're done. (oh! and don't forget to hit the seams with food filler and sand, unless you want the seam lines.)

Just wondering what did u use to smoke out the tailights??? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif thanks
The tailights I currently have smoked are cheap APC carbon fiber euro tails, I'm going to redo this process on my factory tail lights fit much better. I'll install (2) 16-LED Cluster Bulb's in each tailight which will add a unique look. The Factory Tailights are red and will look much better with a smoked tint job. I'll post pics soon of smoking the factory tailights with this process...

Get it at Walmart around $5 a can...
