5.7L truck engine help

well my burb has a knock in the engine.

it was diagnosed as a rod problem.

i was told i will need a new engine !!!

or put in 50w oil for now and eventually get a new engine

if it is where is the cheapest place to get a 5.7L burb engine. jegs, summit..... or pick a part? i have very little money to spend

hah someone else feels my pain !! this happened to me last month...im ordering my engine from advanced auto parts tommorrow !! I let the oil run and I threw a rod that went straight threw the oil pan. Im getting the "tough one" engine..it comes with new everything. If you can ask the guy to give u a deal. I got the manager to go as $1000 with it. And may I add that I have the cleanest 88 burban ever !

I think you blew the most common internal combustion engine on the face of planet Earth. You could most-likely drive out to the nearest trailer "community" and get one out of someones front yard.

my problem is cost. $2200 used installed from my mechanic.

$3200 new/installed from him.

labour is $$ in California so im tryin to find a cheap junker

Describe the problem. What gas are you running? Runing too low an octane will cause problems such as a knock. That is all higher octane is really good for, reducing/eliminating preignition. Let go too long you could bend or break a conrod or push rod. Mistimed spark and/or a cam out of adjustment could have similar effects. Unless you have really trashed the block, you should be able to get your current engine rebuilt, or use it as a core exchange at the very least, for much less than the quote you were given. Shop around. It is a really common engine so finding another on shouldn't be a problem, but I doubt it would really come to that. Get a second or third opinion on what the problem really is befor you spend any money on a replacement. It could well be that your mechanic is feeding you a line.

I just pull an LT1 or LS1 out of a late model camero, and make it mount up. ****** bolts should be the same not sure though.

87 octane is what i use. the oil pressure drops to about 10psi and lower at stop lights. the engine has 150K. . the engine has electronic timing so it cant be adjusted. it sounds like a diesel, thats how loud it is. money is very tight so a block is what im aiming at. the problem was evident when i put in synthetic oil. from the regular. the previous owners did some damage to it so i dont think its my fault.

A small block chevy only needs 7 psi to run correctly. My 94 ran at 7-10 at idle and 40 when going

the check gauges light comes on at stops. and rattles back and forth. it doesno go up to 40 while driving. like 20-25.

Try higher octane gas before you do anything else. I had an older truck with a 350 and it wouldn't run for shit on anything less than 89 and like 91+ much better. The difference in price per gallon was more than made up for by the difference in gas mileage. Running more expensive gas would still be cheaper over the course of several years than replacing the engine if it fixes the problem.
