3 way comps(sort of)

I picked pick up a set of kappa 4"to go into the dash of my 87 4runner. It turns out they are actually aiming the proper direction in their stock locations for best sq. I was wondering if i could get a 3way active crossover and run the kappa 4" 2way separate( they are externally crossed-over) and a pair of kappa6.5 mid woofer from a component set to make a budget 3 way comp set ? how well do you think that would fare? I have access to a rta at my brothers shop so i'd really be able to tweak it if this was deemed a smart choice......what do you think?

btw...i have the kappa 4" already. id have to get the mid's and crossover setup.

Well, you could. But, you'd have to put the 4's on the crossover's "bandpass" channels, then the 6.5's on the "low" outputs and use the amp's internal highpass xover (or HU's internal highpass if it has one) to bandpass the 6.5's aswell.

Should do decently well, if you like the SQ of the speakers themselves.

I'd set the xover frequencies by ear, then use the RTA to "tweak" it if needed.

btw...i have the kappa 4" already. id have to get the mid's and crossover setup.

Keep in mind you'll also need to have 6 channels of amplification, since each speaker will need to be on it's own channel.

how much would i sacrifice in the s.q. department if i went with a 3 way passive crossover if at all?

You'd have to build your own passive xover, correct? That would be difficult getting the points and slopes correct for best performance, since it requires some measurement equipment that most people have access to. Or, if you had access to an extra amp and an active xover....you could borrow those long enough to find out which points/slopes work best, then use that info to build the passives.

wow. i've fixed various electronics but ive never built any from scratch or a kit. i've got to give this a little more thought. thanks.
