3 8's vs 2 10's ... which way do i go?

Speed of the 'booms' is a function of the frequency of the material being reproduced. A 60hz note means the sub will cycle 60 times per second. So if a larger sub produces 'slower' bass, this means its actually producing a completely different frequency than its being fed. Since we know this does not happen, 'slower' bass from larger subs is a misnomer.
But what about it being a bigger sub, wouldn't the signal transfer just a bit slower and possibly cause a delay, possibly like a lag with the bass, where the bass wouldn't be exactly in time with the music?

This has been discussed here many times. For subsonic freqs, moving mass plays very little role in transient response, inductance is the dominating factor.

And again, if signal transfer (transforming the music from an electrical signal to acoustical energy in the air) were slowed, it would alter the frequency the speaker is playing.

ok, here's the deal. I have an old beater car i drive back and forth to work. So far i have added a new head unit (Sony CDX GT700HD) and a set of RF 4" front speakers and 6x9 rear speakers. I would now like to add a little bass. I am not going for extreme SPL or anything, juast want to add a little bass. I think i want to run aprox 600 wats to the subs. the question is ... do i run 3 8's or 2 10's. I would like to go w/ a ported box tuned to somewhere in the mid 30's Hz. Any suggestions? Again i am not looking for any SPL records, just nice deap hard hitting bass.
If you go with 3 subs, your going to have to have an amp that is stable @ 0.3 or 0.6 ohms. Which I doubt you have, just because very little go that low. Or have 3 amps for each. And if you have three amps running your gonna put a huge load on that little pile of a car you have there, which is not good.

If you go with 2 subs you can get away with one amp, or two which ever you prefer.

Depends on how much you wanna spend really. The more subs you have the more money you are generally gonna pay.

IMO, it sounds like you just want some thump in your trunk, and 2 or 3 subs will go way past that! If I were you I would go with one sub either an 8 or 10 inch which ever you prefer/ how much room you have. They will give you plenty of thump, trust me don't think that an 8" sub is puny.

With that being said, once you get a sub you can never get enough bass, and you gonna wanna go bigger and badder, its a viscous cycle!
