2v preout??

lol nothing but higher gain settings.

X300...all these people saying your going to be missing something are incorrect. Your amp will have to work harder as the signal is not as strong, but just means a higher gain setting.

In my case a higher gain setting made NO diff. Went from a Pio 2v to an eXcelon 4.5v and it was a night and day diff. Louder, cleaner, and fuller sounding bass, mids, highs.

Turning up SLA on the Pio did help some, but was still nothing like the Kenwood. And using LOUD just made everything sound muddy.

So why would you automatically assume the difference in sound quality was due to the pre-out voltage swing? There are probably about 8 million different things which had more to do with the improved sound than the fact that the Kenwood had 4.5v preouts, or whatever they are.

Somebody has done some creative marketing out there (probably many years ago) that has lead to this misguided belief that 2v output is bad and a higher output is a huge factor in determining the quality of a head unit.

By itself, it's not really that big of a deal. It should not outweigh other features of a head unit when making a purchasing decision. More important (imo) are sound quality, reputation, warranty, looks, user interface, connectivity/compatability, reliability, crossover and eq features, number and type of outputs, etc.

Sounds to me like you either didn't readjust the gain, or adjusted it differently than it was set with the Pioneer. As those are exactly the subjective differences one would expect if you didn't adjust the gain down enough to compensate for the higher voltage (compared to how it was set with the Pioneer).

Or, as was mentioned, just a general difference in features/etc between the headunits that caused the difference.

If output voltage was such a determinate to sound quality, then your system would sound worse every time you turned the volume down.

Yes, with the disadvantage of hearing more pops, hisses, and feedback. The advantage to having a higher pre out voltage is to keep amps gains setting as low as possible in order to achieve better quality of sound.

Wouldn't that also be dependent on the quality of the amp/amps?

ok, thanks for all the replys. with that being said what do you guys thing of the alpine IVA-W205?
Great unit. I've had a couple. I also had a W200 before that, and currently have a W505.

I like the W505 the best, mainly for the larger screen.

None of the units have built in crossovers or eq features. You can do Imprint with the 505, or add the H701 processor to any of the three. Running the H701 gives you a ton of tuning ability and raises the output voltage to 4v. It's not the cheapest way to go, but it's one heck of a combo. I think perhaps the Imprint module raises the voltage as well. I don't have first hand experience with Imprint.
