2000 Pontiac Firebird Question (ported or sealed)

Im running a hatchback box in a 2000 pontiac firebird - running 1 15" with the kicker 1200watt amp, (cap etc.) I was wondering if you all think ported or sealed would be best? I have it sealed right now and it sounds flat out crisp as hell, and hits unbelivable looks like my hatch is gonna fall off lol, but what bugs me is it only hits VERY low, I was wondering if ported would be louder? seems like with sealed you can barely hear anything outside, but its insane inside - I've always had ported box's this is my first sealed box, so Im just stuck on what to do lol

i've personally owned about 6 f-bodies over the years and built every type of box imaginable for this car, and the sealed hatch box works best just because of all the funky box lines.

well basically you'll never get the room you want out of that hatch (hump area) unless you build something crazy big that goes over the gas tank area, but then you're getting into to much weight as well. So my conclusion on this popular question was sealed.

You could probably do a single 12" ported in the back. Since you have a 15" it might be kinda hard to build a box large enough to go ported. I currently have 2 12's sealed in my camaro but have been debating on weather to switch to a single 12" and port it to try and get better low end output.

You could probably squeeze about 2.5, maybe 3 cubes if you are really good, out of the rear well area (without building over the gas tank). For some 15's that can be a really tight fit for a ported box.

BTW Kolesters, did u build the box yourself for that 15 you are currently running? If not where did you get it? Thanks.

I have 1995 Firebird and I have a 3.4 cubic foot box AFTER sub and port displacement.

I have had 4 sealed boxes and my current ported box in my firebird and I absolutely love my ported box. If you are good with wood working you can get 3 cubic feet easy in the hatch of an f-body.

I say go ported to see if you like it... I know I love it. You just have to find speakers that will match the volume you have to work with.

haha I think I posted pics around here somewhere. Here they are again though.

Just took some careful measurement to get everything to fit. The box doesn' follow the lines of the panels in the back, but I did that on purpose so I could get the most air space possible. This is how close it is to the hatch:

If you cut the panels and extend the box all the way out to the rear fenders of the car I bet you can get over 4 cubic feet. On top of that, if you don't have a spare tire and fiberglass the entire trunk I'd guess there is at least 6 cubic feet to work with.

Measurements for the pieces would be perfect. Is the box in those pics going to be ported or sealed?

I am not quite sure if that box is normal or not. The right side hangs out longer than the left side for some reason. It fits in my trunk, but the sides are not symmetrical lol.

I carpeted the box so I can't measure the actual pieces, but I can get general measurements if those would help.
