2000 Ford Taurus Aftermarket Stereo

So, I got a 2000 Ford Taurus. It has the electronic AC controls, not the knobs. I was told I could buy a $250 dash kit for it, because the entire assembly has to be replaced. Is there a way to cut it out and insert an aftermarket? I don't know if the internals are integrated together. My local shop said they can't do that because they have never tried to do something like that before. What should I do? I'm not trying to spend $200+ on a stupid dash kit for it.

the problem youre going to run into is the dash kit you get for $200 also includes an umbilical cord that runs the deck power to the trunk where all the actual stuff is located. I just found a kit on amazon for $57 with all the stuff youd need for a single din deck. those early 2000s taurus's are a PITA

Ok, that isn't for the right one. I have the electronic weather controls, NOT the knobs. Cheapest I found was $180.

Ok, so I missed that part. All I can tell you is that if you want to cut the OEM abs plastic oval, is that it'll be an utter mess if you've not done something like that before and a shop would charge you a pretty large amount of green pieces of paper with Mr Washington on them because of it being custom fabbing and the work that would have to be done to make a 30 ft 2 way harness unless you wanted them to rewire it from the dash, either way it'd cost you a pretty penny. Long story short, you got the wrong car if you want a reasonably priced deck install. Don't shoot the messenger here man... I guess you could check salvage yards for totaled Taurus's that have the RIGHT DASH ac controls and see what they'd charge you for it, but you're not gonna get off cheap there either. When I was the 12v electronics manager at my (now defunkt) ultimate electronics, MANY Taurus owners who had the dreaded oval dash walked away pissed with the stock stereo in their car because of fords hairbrained idea to set the dash up the way they did...

You either buy the dash kit or you don't have an aftermarket radio unless you want to give up AC controls. Converting from analog to digital A/C controls and vice versa in a Taurus is a big job.

I've toyed with the idea of going without. Maybe a nice 4 channel amp, or 4 channel and a mono sub amp with cables I can plug my cell phone into.

I've got the knobs myself, and I don't really want to mess with those. Buttons would be even worse!
