2 stereo wiring

im trying to install a dvd player into my car i have a cd player in it right now. i want them both because the cd player has more power then the dvd player...anyways i cut little sections out of each wire of the cd player so i could just tap into them...i got the dvd player turned on by doign that. so they both were both hooked up, except for the speakers to the dvd player. i turned on the cd player to listen to some music... i went on and hooked one of the speakers from the dvd player then all the speakers turned off. so i unhooked the speaker, and they went on playing the song. i tried hooking the one speaker up again and the same thing happend each time i did this. anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to install a second player?
