(2) Alpine 12" Type-Rs...

I've done a lot of searching and read about different boxes and even searched for Alpine Type-R to see what boxes others are using. So now I'm going to ask the age old question...

Which box, in your opinion, would be the best for me? Im running (2) 12" Alpine Type-R 2 ohm versions off of a single M1005. I'm running approx. 500 wrms to each sub. I listen to a lot of rock (Linkin Park, Evanesance type rock) and a little rap from time to time. This is also going into a 2004 Nissan Frontier extended cab.

From what I've been reading it seems like the Type-Rs sound the best in a ported box... Will it still sound good listening to rock music?

What size should I make the box and should each speaker have its own enclosure or should they share the same space? The top, bottom and face of my box will be fiberglassed with the speakers mounted on the front. The sides, back, and some sections of the top will be 3/4" MDF along with the basic frame and some bracing in the box. It also seems that tuning the port to about 33-34 hz would be the best for my situation. If the speakers are on the front of the box does it make a different where the ports are? I believe they are going to be on the top.

Any help and/or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a winner to me... Now I just need to figure out how to tune the port. I dont quite understand some of the explanations on here, but I just need to read thru them carefully and Im sure I can figure it out. Since a good portion of my box is going to be fiberglass is might be a little tricky to get it exactly right. I was thinking about having the ports on the top of the box facing up, but Im scared something might fall inside the box. I might need to rethink that idea and see if I can come up with a better idea.

Thanks for the help.

ok I've almost got my box design where I want it. I'm figuring out the port now. I was told I needed about 30 sq. in. per sub, so it needs to be 60 sq. in. for one port. I figured my port would need to be about 28" long give or take (I don't remember off the top of my head exactly what it needed to be). Can my port wrap around the box like in the diagram below. I dont have enough room to run a straight port. My speakers will be on the front of the box with the port on the top.

Also my port will have either a 4" x 15" opening or a 3.5" x 17.25" opening. Are both of those ok?

I wanted to bring this back up one more time since there have been some minor changes to my setup...

I now have the 4 ohm dvc version of the Type-Rs and (2)M1005s... I'm going to be running each sub on their own amp... Is the 4cu.ft. box with the 60 sq.in. port still going to be good for me since I have double the power I had planned on running?

I would make a 4 cu. ft. box tuned to low 30's or even 28. You wont loose much if any SQ from sealed. There might be plans in the sticky that will be good.
well i actually i had type R in a 2 foot @ 28 enclosure with 500 watts and right now a its in a sealed recieving 1000 watts and the sealed sounds alot better overall but the ported one hit the lows alot better.

that drawing above is no longer valid... My box has changed. Its still going to be tough for me to get 4cu.ft. after port and speaker displacement. I might just end up going sealed with each speaker in its own enclosure... What size is your box PSturmer?

mine is 1 cubic foot.

but you only have 500 watts to each sub, so i'd recomend ported. unless in the future you will get like a 2500d or a hercules.

right now i am planning a system for a friend. it will be 2 hifonics bxi 1606d's powering 2 15'' type R's sealed in an explorer. like 1.75 cubes each. if he is being a bith about the money he will have to get one 12'' R. should be nice either way.

I actually have 1000 rms going to each sub now. I just bought a second MRD-M1005. So each sub will have its own m1005. Birth sheet on the one I have now is 1072 rms. I havnt recieved the second one yet. Its supposed to be here tomorrow.

It sounds like I should put them in a sealed box with the power I have for them. If I decide to go with a slot ported box I will be a little under 4cu.ft. when its done and my port will be "U" shaped. It would have to go along the top, back and about 6" along the bottom of my box.

I honestly dont know which route I should take. Im not concerned about it being extremely loud. I already have some hearing loss from not being smart about my systems when I was a teen. I basically want a nice sounding system, hard clean bass, and clear mids and highs.

heres what my system consists of so far. Should give a better picture of my setup. All of my equipment is Alpine, except wiring...
