WHATS A SUBWOOFER!?!?!?
Needing something small to fit on my desk next to my 22inch widescreen LCD, I decided to go for a custom 2.1 channel system.

Satellites are Vifa 3.5inch full range drivers, and Peerless dome tweeters in a 1 litre sealed box, I plan on crossing over at about 3000Hz.

Subwoofer is a Peerless XLS 10inch, 4 ohm version, in 30litres tuned to 35Hz.

I plan on crossing over from the sub to the sats at 200Hz

started making the satellites yesterday //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

NOW!!!

I also plan on making my own amplifier for the system, probably using a switchmode powersupply, chip amps all around, probably LM3886's for the satellites, and either a class D for the subwoofer, or a couple of those national chip amps, with the two amps in the one package (LM4780?)

any input people?

seeyas!

I started painting one orange, with minimal prep work, just to see how it would turn out...

will sand it back a bit today again, and try to get it smoother, but I think with a bit of work, it should end up good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Ditch the crossover in the vocal range if the full range drivers have a decent response. Any graphs? If there are no surprises in the upper range, then just crossover the tweeter with a cap at around 10k, or a second order if you wish...

Best crossover is no crossover (in the vocal range)...

not sure what I'm going to do about the amplifier yet...

the "full range" speakers play pretty much nothing above 15,000Hz...

anything above about 3,000hz starts to seriously suffer off axis...

Wow. 10 kHz seems a bit high to cross that driver over.

I would say he is going to have more issues with crossing over the subwoofer at 200 Hz than he would have crossing the mid and tweeter at 3 kHz. By 3k most of the bulk of the vocal energy is spent and you only have some harmonic energy left. It is important to reproduce these harmonics but not important enough to drive the driver into being beamy and sounding like butt. If he crosses it over correctly he should have a fine response in the 3 kHz range.

If he was building the subwoofer into the box and using a more midrange designed driver which would handle the higher frequencies better then I would say 200 Hz and maybe 3-5k crossover to the tweeter.

What was your painting technique?

Its all about preference, full range is not for everyone, but with a decent driver, nothing compares to the seemless transition with a full range driver and a helper tweeter, it sounds so much more natural without crossovers...

They defiantly look like little guy speakers. I think the color accents them nicely...

Well an ideal loudspeaker system is one driver that handles all of the frequencies at the same time, but all designs have limitations and it is a matter of personal preference.

Some people think bose sounds good. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Seriously though, there are ways to combat the issues with full range drivers, and there are many that can play the majority of the 10 octaves effectively in the right enclosure...

I still say if the driver has a great response, then use it full range, most of the problems are associated with the shape of the baffle, which is why we use "suprabaffles" to combat diffraction

As you can see, ideally we want a shape that resembles a sphere with a trailing edge, however its difficult to do without a lathe, so the next best thing is the truncated pyramid which is very easy to make.

I state once again, best crossover is no crossover, so why use one if the driver has a natural (smooth) rolloff in stock form? Again, I would have to see the response graph for the specific driver...

Edit: Didn't see the graph! That nasty peak at 10K would need a notch filter or EQing, but otherwise the response slowly goes down as it approaches 20k, which is ideal. A simple 2uF cap on the tweeter and the drivers wired in parallel would work great, however I don't like the response between 1-2k //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

BTW nice color!
