1N4001 vs. IN4001

I don't really know anything about diodes, but are these the same diode? My alarm book states that I need a IN4001 diode, but radio shack only has a 1N4001 diode.

Yes they are different, but a IN4005 is better than a IN4001 and can take its place.

Diode numbers start with 1, not I. It's a missprint.
That series of diodes has increasing max voltage ratings as he numbers go up... a 4001 is 100 volts, 4002 is 200 volts, etc (I think).. you can always use a higher voltage rating.
