1990 Suburban stereo wiring

Hi, I just got done looking at the stereo in my suburban. I am planning an upgrade, but I have a problem. My dad got the stereo that is currently installed in there from JCPennys:crap:. Whoever installed it cut the factory wiring harness off and put this one on:verymad:. This means that I can't get a wiring harness adapter that has the universal aftermarket color-coded wires on one end and the factory plug on the other. So, what i need to know is what each color of the stock wire corresponds to. Is there a way to test this?

Thanks a lot

That's exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot. Now I gotta wait till Christmas to buy all of my stuff when it's on sale.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Thanks again

Well, looking at that chart, I don't know what DIM means. I am assuming that ILL means dash light illumination, MEM in +12V constant and PWR is +12V accessory. Is DIM something that I am not going to use?

DIM means dimmer, it's the wire that makes the illumination of the radio become not as bright when you turn your headlights on.

Not all GM cars have that wire, I had to splice mine from another location on my car's harness to use that feature on my radio.

The illumination wire sends it power to use lighting it up, the dimmer wire sends a signal to automatically cut that voltage back. Kinda like a remote wire sending a signal to turn on an amp.

What radio are you looking at buying? Every deck you look at should have an illumination wire.

So when i am wiring this thing up I am going to connect the ILL wire from the car (gray) to the Dimmer Control wire on the deck (orange/white). And I am going to do what with the DIM (brown) from the car?

Thanks for being patient with a noob:banghead:

sorry to see it is a suburban. there a pain to install head units in, suburbans and yukon espcially 97-03's are a pain to install wiring in the dash without completly pulling it apart, then running them to the back to the amp, DONT even get me started, its a real pain
