You can get full output with the sub level being on 0, it just depends how you have the rest of your stuff set up(ie: higher gain setting). Ok to prove it. The gain on your amp is used to match the preout level of your HU. The subwoofer volumn on the deck is used to raise or lower this. If you set the gain correctly with the subwoofer at 0 on the deck then you get the same output as if you set the gain with it at 12
