Yes, usually 18's have an excursion advantage over 8's. Yes, that *can* create an output advantage. But there are many outside factors, like enclosure design (type/size/tuning/alignment/impedance rise) that will affect the total excursion potential of the subwoofer(s) in the system.
One possible solution is for you to build a box with an interchangeable port. One port tuned high for burping at the local shows, and one port tuned low for daily listening. The array of smaller subs would add an extra layer of complication to this type of design however.
Remember, there is a big difference between being able to hit 150db, for a few seconds, at only one perfect frequency (burp)... and being able to hit 150db in a wide enough passband to make the system enjoyable to use for playing music.
