15" CVR Smells weird

500 watts is over powering it? arent they 500watts RMS and 1000watts max
The cone doesnt get hot.. The gain and bass boost are all the way up.

Is it better to turn it down and then turn it up on the head unit?
thats ur problem....look up how to set them...leave bass boost all the way down.....

and learn to set the gains...ur clipping the hell out of the sub

Build a ported box for it. I don't know if this is generally true (never had a sealed box), but I've had a few people that I've designed boxes for tell me that ported keeps their woofer cooler, at least the cone.

I had the same thing happen to me with a prefab box. Lots of them use OSB plywood which contains a lot of glue to hold the pieces together. The friction from the wood vibrating causes it to heat up and smell really strong. Mind you, I was pushing almost 3,000 watts, not 500. But I would not take the others recommendations lightly. Making sure your gains are set correctly is VERY important!! I actually made my box smoke on a continuous 45 hz burp (about 4 minutes). Scared the **** out of me!!!
