i see some amps for sale and they state that at 14.4 v they have a surtain output....

How do you get 14.4 v out of your car????

well most see that because of more than 1 battery or bigger alt. most people with daily system won't see 14.4 or even 16v

well...for example...kenwood amps...they give the rms wattage for 14.4V...how am i suposed to know how much it put outs at 12?

They only way to know for sure is to have the amp bench testes at 12V.

Sounds like a dead alternator to me

Yes, its happened to my moms car.

everything was dim and the car had like no power.

A normal battery should sit at 12.3V, not 11.5

batteries go from 12.6 to low 12 range. has to deal with their parasitic drain. if your alternator is working you should put out no more than 13.9-14.2 volts. any more and your voltage regulator is toast. 16vs is possible if you have an adjustable voltage reg but be careful because you will damage most everything electrical in your vehicle.

Most car audio gear can take up to 15V without cooking itself
