Agreed. Unless it's a tiny speaker/sub, don't use anything less than 3/4". If you absolutely had to use .5" just made sure you brace it well. Dowels work well.

Question, how did u attach the 2 pieces together to make it 1 inch? just glue with some nails spread through the middle and surrounding sides, or something more complicated?

You can either glue the two baffles together and clamp them until they dry or glue them and screw them together.
