1200w to a p3?

i just bought a 12" RF p3 D4 from fosgate forever. he says its 500rms. and he matched me up with a power acoustik OV2-1200. the amp does 600w @ 4ohm. i didnt realize this till after the sale. ive been told and read that its safe at 2 ohm mono. but do you think a p3 could handle 1200w daily? and do you think the amp is really safe at 2 ohms? or should i play it safe and run it in stereo at 500w?

That amp truly gives around 1,000 at 2ohms I'd say

It's pushing it to be honest, if you do it, keep your gains turned down and watch yourself with your head unit

yeah, i figured it wouldnt do 1200. and id defintaly be safe with the gains. lets get some more feedback

I'm not saying it'll only do 1,000, but if I had to guess it'd probably be somewhere closer to 1,000 than say 1200 as stated

Either way, same scenario

Question:

when setting gains with a DMM, its sqrt(power*resistance). so in this case it would be sqrt(1200*2).

if i set it using the equation sqrt(800*2), would that be like giving it 800w?

most subs i've worked with only reach half of there mechanical limit at their rms power... (obviously for company insurance reasons) so i would say it SHOULD take it if the power is clean

• RMS @ 4 Ohms: 250 X 2

• RMS @ 2 Ohms: 300 X 2

• RMS Mono: 600 @ 4 Ohms

At 2ohms mono that amp will get nowhere close to doubling its output, at most I would expect 800watts RMS (at 14v).

You must remember that this is a cheaper class A/B amplifier and will have poor efficiency.
