10" Memphis or JL Audio?

I just bought a pair of 12" Punch HX2's and they are just too much and too boomy. Plus I dont have enough power. I definitely want SQ rather than SPL. Even running 1 of them in a sealed enclosure doesnt do it. (but its closer). I'm currently running 410W @ 2 ohms (300@4) and am looking for a pair of 10"s.

I'm thinking Memphis Audio Power reference or I've found a pair of JL Audio 10" W6's for $225...but I'm afraid of being in the "not enough power" problem again. However have found an amp that should push them. (485@2 ohms x2) that I can get cheap.

I want punch plus SQ. Whatever I run will probably be in a sealed enclosure.

Would I be happy with the Memphis's or should I go for the JL W6's and the upgraded amp?

Termlab, Apparently plenty of us are having issues starting new posts in the last few days. For some reason you have to start a post with only a few words then go back and edit it. I have no idea why this is happening...but its getting really freakin' old.

SO..you still want to call me an idiot? I think it took me about 4 minutes to get the post updated.

Let's start to decipher a little bit.

You want more quality than bass, correct? K.

Personally, I think that if you're going to buy the 10w6's, it's going to be fairly loud as compared to the Power Reference Memphis 10's

However, you can use the power you have now for the PR10's nad pick up both PR10's forl ike 130 shipped(talk to DJDillioDon) - it may be a tad more expensive I don't know

I vote two Memphis, since you don't want to be as loud, keep in mind the Memphis would be brand new, also

JL's might have more clarity to them, I'm not sure.

Actually, clarity would be preferable. What I'm finding with these Punch HX2's is that they're so boomy there is no definition to the bass. 2 is just ungodly. 1 is passable..but not what I want.

I'm a guitarist and like to hear the definition in everything....yet I also like that solid punch you get from a good spl speaker. So...I guess I want the world. :)

Absolutley I'd look at other options. I've posted a few things here and in 10" the Memphis's come up as a decent "dont break the bank" sub. I originally considered Alpine Type S..but I"m not sure if thats a SQL or SPL speaker.

I just remember that the first 2-10's I tested on my system were a pair of Xtants and they sounded pretty good. I figured Xtants arent great subs so I could do better.

W6 will not get much louder than a PR. SQ will be way better in the W6 but for twice the power you wont see it much louder. PRs are way louder than W3v2 with the same power.

Well, with the pair of W6's I'd probably purchase a Profile ap2000. I can get a refurb for $130. That delivers 485 @ 2 ohms x 2. That should drive them and be reasonably priced.

From a price standpoint:

Memphis: $150 (shipping) plus $50 for a 2x10 enclosure = approx $200.

2x10 W6 at local pawn $230 plus $130 for Profile = $360...but if I'll be happier in the end then I'm fine doing that.

I see we've got a local shop that carries Memphis. I'm gonna check them out tomorrow and see what they've got. Maybe they've got something setup and I can throw them in the car and test.

Well, I just realized that I dont have space in my trunks board for a 24 1/2 inch Profile amp.

So....its Memphis Audio unless someone can give me another manufacturer.
