06 Tacoma DBL Cab Questions

Hey,

First time poster here, just found the site and was hoping somebody here might have some experience or some advice to give my system a little bit of a better sound.

I have a custom box built with a shallow mount sub in it behind my rear passenger seat, and I'm just not satisfied with it. I'm sure it's because of the small box size, but I am kind of stuck with that since there is not a lot of room behind the seats in these vehicles.

It seems to sound very "hollow" and not very deep and full like my other systems have been. I have stuffed the box with polyfill, tried every tuning option I could, and I'm just not figuring it out. Do you guys have any advice?

believe it or not i herd a 12" kenwood excelon shallow the other day the one with the cone looks like carbon fiber, and was really impressed. deep and accurate.

Depends on what you are used to, and what you were expecting out of the setup.

How big is that box? It looks small, and it looks(honestly) like it's even smaller than we're seeing, there's just cutouts for where wire goes in to hide it. Looks like they could have extended it further and just cut-out for that bracket.

most thin subs require .8 or so ft3 looks like you got that what powr? anddoes it clear the seat when you pound it almost all thins want 1.5 to 3 inches free air in front

this is one I did in a ford super duty it only had 1.62 ft 3 after all displacements but it POUNDED! but it also had two (2)13.5 JL flat piston on 1k

I'm not sure exactly what the airspace of that box is. But I know it's small. Smaller than I wanted. The shop that I hired to do it did not do what I requested at all - not even close - and that is why they gave me the Alpine amp for free, to make up for it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

This is what I had originally drawn up in AutoCAD - I was going to build it myself but I got impatient waiting for myself to get out and do it so I just decided to go have somebody do it. Do you think this design would be better?

This was going to be one complete box instead of two seperate parts, and the space behind the amp was going to be airspace as well to make the box as big as possible. The amp displayed in this drawup was originally the Kicker zx700.5 that I had.

And believe me, I've been drooling over those JL Shallow mounts since they were anounced over a year ago. But $400 is just a little steep.

And as for how much space I have for between the seat and the sub - since that picture was taken I have taken off the back panel of that seat so it frees up a little more space. I would say there is at least an inch or two of space.

I will look into that sub. I just have to worry about mounting depth. Thanks for the tip though.

So do you think this sub will sound better and fuller than the CVT that I currently have? This one is guaranteed to fit. I just don't think I can spend $400 on one sub (the JL) and cross my fingers hoping it sounds good. $190 isn't so bad.

How long have you had it? I had that same sub in my truck with a 300 watt amp. It took a good 50 hours of play time for it to break in and sounded much better.

I have had it since September-October. I have put 15,000 miles on the truck since then, so I would have expected it broken in by now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

The reason I went with all Kicker was because I got 80% off through direct accommodations with Kicker. I really was hoping more from this sub/setup though.

Here's my set up in my '06 Tacoma Double cab.

.55 cuft box with an Image Dynamics IDV.3 10" sub and powered by the same PDX5 amp. Also have some polyfill in it. Mine hit's pretty hard, nice deep sounding bass. Nothing that's overpowering but definetely not a hollow sounding sub and box.

The box is made by Tacotunes and covered with Line-x. I made the amp board attached to it for my crossovers and amp.
