Happens to a lot of them, I called it in to their service line. If you have a receipt and serial number they might service it for free like they did mine. If you go active, yes you need a channel for each of the speakers unless your amp will put out enough power to wire multiple ones up then you could go down on the final resistance, again if your amp can handle it. No you cannot wire your tweets to your mids as they both need to have different...

I would go active on your front stage since you have that ability with that amplifier and leave the rear speakers alone personally but that's just me. You can cross them straight from your amp you dont even need to have a three way active head unit. The easy way out would be to buy the HSK...

Interesting, I'll keep a look out. The 85.4 I've been banging on and haven't smelt anything. I have one of those "trunk fwalls" though so I don't think it'll make its way through unless it realllly stinks.
