Take the 8455 - hands down it is the best unit and I've used. Whitemax hit the nails on the head regarding the two issues of note, but both are miniscule, really, and you'll not find them continually annoying. You'll get used to the fast advance track dial, and so you advance two tracks... just...

I am running a 1996 Reference Picasso, bridged. Bridged, the amp is rated for 2 x 100 RMS at 12v; Four-channel mode the amp is said to give 25 x 4 RMS at 12v. Still think active is the way to go? I suspect it is... I am just curious to hear the justification for as to why. Thanks for any thoughts.

Been there, done that... rear speakers are a waste of time, effort and money. Sell of your rear-gear and upgrade your front stage if you want to continue and tinker. ESPECIALLY, since your explorer is only a two-door.
