People do use ported boxes 95% of the time for SPL. Why do you think it is so amazing when you have a guy hitting 160's in a sealed box? What kind of meter were you using? Please rewrite what you were trying to say about the two boxes, because it makes very little sense.

As cone area is doubled, the SPL is increased by 3 db. Typically, 12's to 15's have a 4 to 7 ratio on cone area. You can expect an increase of 2 db from switching from a 12 to 15. This is with the same sub on the same amp.

Think of it this way, A ported box, tuned to a certain frequency, allows the air from the sub's backstroke to come out the ports in synchronization with the subs. This doubles the amount of air being pushed. The more air that is pushed, the more SPL.

I must agree that the Type R's are not primarily used for SPL. But, if you insist, I would go with a ported box tuned to 45-55 hertz. This will sound terrible for everyday music listening, and totally defeat the purpose of Alpine's SQ, but it will give you a chance to get into the 140's. I...
