I'm over Android Auto - single din options

As the title says, I'm over Android auto/carplay and want to just go back to a single din and playing whatever audio comes out of my phone over USB.

Pioneer says that they still have the capability of playing audio over usb like the old days, can anyone confirm? I have a pixel 9 pro, or a OnePlus 11.

Their app controlled playback is a non-starter, pioneer never supported the apps I use and still don't. So whatever I end up with needs to be NOT app-based.

What else can I do if audio over usb isn't an option? An external dac to some kind of digital input on the head unit?

I'm so far out of touch with what is available now and it all looks extremely disappointing.

I always used to be a pioneer nut swinger, but I'm open to options that aren't jvc/Kenwood.

Oh and I'd love to get a CD player back again.

Not that it really matter, but my current system is:

JVC KW-M788BH
2000's punch 400.4 for the doors
SoundCubed HDX3-10
Ds18 3k

In a 2015 focus st

I've got an old Kenwood excellon something or other that I also hate, and an old school pioneer premier something or other, the ones with the awesome screen from the mid 2000's. I can put the pioneer in, but having BT would be actually helpful. The Kenwood has BT but it errors out constantly.

edit: i think i have a DEH-580MP or something very similar. Looking them up on eBay has me blown away, are people actually selling these things for $300+?? (actually buying i guess i mean!)

That unit also has the expansion port which I used to have an RCA adapter for. I wonder if there are other better options now a days? Or might have existed even? I never looked beyond the RCA adapter.

Something like this:

+ My old Pioneer+ IP bus to rca + RCA to probably 4.4mm balanced output...(I've never used 4.4 but seems like a good idea)

Would actually work. But man that's a LOT of connections.

But it also has Bluetooth input with actually decent codec support. I don't really have any big complaints with ldac and aptxhd, but I'd prefer a wired connection.

But I would also be ok with a brand new single din that just does what I want it to do too

I ran a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X998 for the LOOOONGEST time. The link I dropped for you is a newer "better" version. Single DIN with all the goodies. It plays up to HiRes audio through the USB port. FLAC and most of the others 24bit/96kHz.

Ok that one has piqued my interest. I'm a little weary of the def bonce brand having never used anything from them though.

Have you confirmed it'll do android audio over usb? Not just "app control"? My old Kenwood used to, but I hasn't actually worked with any phone newer than a note4.

I've had a lot of head units over the years and jvc/Kenwood are the only 2 that have ever given me problems.

I did end up sending them a question on their form. Thanks for showing those!

They replied with

"Hello. Yes, you can connect the phone through USB and play music"

So, maybe worth a try.

Edit: didn't even notice, no CD player. Maybe asking too much these days

I ended up going with the pioneer 7200. I'll update when I get to test it. I ended up buying from crutchfield as their return policy seems to be the best and cust service told me if I just bench test it they'll still accept the return if it doesn't work as required.

I don't get this about today's USB ports on radios... your 7200 uses the FAT file system still. I just don't get that. They offer radios that use the NTFS so I don't understand why they don't just do that for all radios.

I think that's just due to fat32 being kinda the defacto standard for flash thumb drives still. not sure why they can't support other formats as well though. Car audio (head units anyways) really has just given up modernizing.

Heck, NONE of these head units even support better Bluetooth codecs. Sbc only. Woo. I was hoping the one Sony has would support ldac. Nope. Listen to your music using the worst codec available and like it. I prefer apt-x because I'm not a Sony fan (and it's basically not supported at all with custom roms because it's so proprietary being sony), but it's all but gone.

Out of necessity those are some of the reasons I went with the FiiO M11S. Just run it to a DSP and then to the system. It plays everything and I can store all my HiRes files on the microSD card. It also does streaming music apps. Runs an android OS. Does Bluetooth with AptX-HD and all the others.

You should have lead with that. :ROFLMAO:

I don't use the internal amp at all, this looks like it'd do almost everything I want except the CD player. I could get over the CD player though. I just still have a lot of them laying around and I hate to see them go to waste ya know? They can still be fun on long trips.

I'll def keep it in mind if this attempt doesn't work out. Does it have gps? I didn't see it mentioned but didn't look very hard. I could easily just mount that to my dash permanently and just hotspot to it.

I don't think it has GPS. A HiRes music player is pretty cool though. You could make clones of your CD's and load them onto a micro SD card. I am running a 2TB in my FiiO. NO WHERE NEAR FILLED UP lol
