Huh? The hood vents on the '77 and '78 are louvered. Mine was a '77. I replaced the hood with one from pre-1977.
You didn;t know you can take a stock car to the track? The ZCCA used to do multiple track days a year, where non-racers could go and take a class, then run their car around a track. Fun stuff.
Yes, from 1982 on, all 280zx's had the Turbo Hood. Turbo or not. The only one that had an opening was the drivers side. I will show you as this was my hood swapped onto my turbo... That shiny thing is what is called an adjustable blow off valve! Notice, the only light in this Florida mid day sun shot entering is from the opening. Not the fake vents.

I had no interest in taking my Z cars to the track. They were slow.

My buddy had a real nice 76 that he spent a TON of time making into a street legal race car. He was good on back roads, but didn't know the limits, and rolled it 7 times on his second lap when he slid into the sand at Bridgehampton.
He was lucky to live and learn.

Fair enough. Yeah, that was my ZX. A victim of east coast winters, the unibody turned to swiss cheese.
Traded it when I moved for an LCD movie projector, when they were stupid-expensive.
My Turbo died from the rust cancer as well.

How did we segue from you claiming a '77 Z didn't have louvered hood vents, to you feeling the need to explain what was on the hood of a Turbo ZX?

No one ever disputed or even brought up the issue.

Adjustable blow off. Why were you worried, if the car was stock? Did you have a bad transmission, and would dump the throttle to force the gear change?
Did you have a bad AFM that would go into limp mode unexpectedly?
Did you just get excited by a shiny new object?

Because I wasn't talking about a 77 originally. You must have been.

The Turbo cars had like 6psi of boost stock. I removed the regulator on the intake and plugged it. I added the blow off valve and was able to run just over 12psi without any issues. This made the car much more fun to drive. An extra 6psi of boost yielding 5hp conservatively at sea level so call it an extra 30-40hp on top of the stock 180hp. The T-5 shifted just fine. Yes, the Turbo 280zx's came with T-5 transmissions.

AFM? No, these were speed density cars that relied on a carbon track and pick up needle for the signal.

My mum, ripping around our property.
No, not from a "car family" at all 🙄

My shop, from the storage level over the offices. At least 3 Z cars in the pic.

Recognize the color scheme on that little Datsun?
Maybe the car behind it?

FLAG door mirrors for the Z car. NOS. Looked better than stock.

NOS for the 1980 ZX.

I couldn't be part of the team "full time" due to school, but they still gave me a jacket for helping out when I was able.
