Do you honestly believe hospitals were unnecessarily admitting people on Medicare and declaring them as COVID patients, just so they could get more money than they get from non-COVID Medicare patients?

I'm not familiar with the pressure to NOT put COIVD on the DCs. I remember the right screaming from the rooftops that it was being put on the DC when it was a "fake" illness.
When did they flip that script?
I would think the more COVID numbers, the easier to ignore rules for the emergency (?)

There was definitely was pressure in some organizations to maximize Covid revenue. I'm aware of specific cases where employees where directed to "find" Covid. Most organizations seek to maximize revenue. Keep in mind flu practically disappeared during Covid; I think it's safe to assume alot flu cases were being classified as Covid vs assuming the flu went away for 18 months.

Hospitals got paid for treating people with COVID. If you are guaranteed payment and all you have to do is check a box and nobody is going to question you. Yeah they were checking those boxes. It wasn't about anything more than getting paid.

Was a simple COVID positive enough to admit someone, when they were already over-flooded with people who were sick beyond measure, and dying in droves?

My father in law was hospitalized for a severe seizure ( which was from undiagnosed brain cancer)...he was listed as a covid case while there...the only logical reason the hospital would do that is the additional covid funds at the time...

I can only speak to a very narrow anecdotal experience. People were being advised to mark any patient with Covid symptoms as Covid. My understanding is both private & Medicare paid extra for Covd (ie PPE charges). I've never heard of patients unnecessarily being admitted into full capacity hospitals. For much of the pandemic, symptoms were enough to declare somebody Covid positive and docs would sometimes ignore negative Covid tests if they felt it was a false negative.

I've never looked up bronchitis numbers, but I wonder if/how much bronchitis numbers dropped during Covid.
