Hello

I have a 2009 F250 and getting ready to upgrade the stereo. This or a new truck and we all know what they cost.

Current setup is kenwood touch screen alpine 6x9s powered by head unit (right I think is blown) JL 10w0 amplified truck wedge It’s just ok even before speaker went out. I want to spend 2k ish in upgrade for new 6x9s amp and upgraded sub.

One current question is to DSP or not on the amp.

My current plan is for:

Focal ISU 690 components 6x9s

JL audio 12w3 preloaded truck wedge

Audison AP5.9 bit 5 channel amp. 40 x 2 90 x 2 270 x 1.

Will spray and dynamat interior doors

Thoughts? Any help. The brands that were the jam when I was a kid are no longer the same.

I’ve also looked into hertz as they have a nice 6x9. I could also save a ton of cash w none dsp amp.

Thanks in advance.

Looks good to me. Dynamat is over priced. I'd use damplifier instead and also do the floor eventually.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m planning on doing floor same time as build. I’m not sure exact product I’m using. My friend owes an overland van building company so I will use what he has.

Since you're asking about dsp - if you have or can fit an rta mic into the budget, do dsp. A good budget rta: https://www.minidsp.com/products/acoustic-measurement/umik-1

DSP + rta correction will improve your treble a lot. You don't need the rta mic but it makes it easy to figure out what eq changes need to be made. It won't do much for the sub. It also takes time to learn and do but if you like tuning your setup it's fun. The end results are also far better than spending more on speakers.

But, you have a fairly simple setup (4 speakers + sub), dsp is mandatory if you have a complex setup with active crossovers and lots of speakers playing in different bands. And focal is good from what I've read (I haven't heard them in person), they'll probably sound fine as is.

I think it comes down to whether or not you'll tune the dsp well, if you don't it's worthless.

Are you set on the Focals? Focal is expensive. So is Hertz, which you mentioned. Overpriced even. Budget brands you might remember like JBL, Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, etc. they're still around. Pioneer and Infinity (owned by Harman audio which owns jbl) make some great budget stuff. So if you want to reduce budget significantly, look there.

I’m not set on anything at this point other than keeping the head unit. Goal of build is sound quality. If I buy a dsp amp I will for sure tune it. There is no point if don’t as you said.

I’m going to a local independent shop this week to listen to some stuff. They are a dealer for brands I’m interested in and can get more ideas.

Thanks for the feedback and time providing me the information.

Update on build. Ordered everything this week

Amp is an Audison AF M-11 DSP 5 channel amp
Hertz Mille legend 280.3 tweeters
Hertz Mile legend 1650.3 6.5 mids
2 JL audio 8w3 in the micro ported enclosure made by JL

Hi hopes for this. I’m going to treat the doors floor back wall. Really want to showcase the sound quality and clarity.

For a sub, are you looking at the 12w3 or the shallow 12wt3? What deck are you using?

You don't really need a DSP for a small system in a truck. I would look into a more powerful 5ch amp. 300 watts is not enough for the sub. Also, for more clarity, I would recommend 5-1/4" or 6-1/2" speakers for the front doors and 6x8" in the rear. 6x9's have good mid-bass, but their vocals and highs are not the best. Also, the doors and rear pillar don't offer enough air space for 6x9's to provide the bass you would expect from a 6x9. Lastly, I wouldn't recommend spraying the doors. Using a thin sound deadening material would be perfectly fine.

There are much less expensive amps, but for the upper range, the JL Audio RD900/5 is a really nice amp, but again, you can get pretty good amps for much less.

Thanks for the feedback. I did go with a bigger amp. Sub wise I went with 2 8w3 in the micro port box. My updated post above says exactly what I bought. I did go with 6.5 mids. I found a deal on Mille legends on both mids and tweeters and went for it.
