It could have been anyone and I would have defended them. The fact of business is they didn't know what he had, period. If they knew they would have just went in and got them not set him up by asking for shit. Why do they have to "ask" for an "illegally possessed thing" back? That's not how the law works. If you KNOW that person has something illegal, you provide proof to the judge, secure the warrant, arrest said suspect, collect said items where they will now be used as what... anyone.. anyone? As evidence in the trial against the accused.
Clearly that isn't how it works. Different things happen to different people based on who they are the circumstances involved. Nobody would give a flying fvck if you or I lied about getting blow jobs from our intern. For Bill Clinton it literally turned into a federal case.
I guarantee you if the FBI got a search warrant for classified docs at my house and then found them, I would have been arrested on site. OTOH, Trump clearly gets preferential treatment. Biden is getting preferential treatment.
IMHO, the FBI did know what he had and had an inventory of what they thought he had, which is why they continued to ask for documents. It was documented that he wouldn't return classified intel when asked for it, so there was probably a list of what Trump didn't return. If I was handling classified intel at the WH (or anywhere else for that matter) and didn't get all the docs returned to me, I can guarantee you I would document it in preparation for the day of reckoning.
Or the other possiblity is Trump unknowingly took classified docs, which would make him extremely careless at best. Then he unknowingly sent a bunch of those classified docs to NARA, which opened this whole can worms. And then confronted with the fact he might be sitting on more classified docs decided he wasn't going to cooperate and then when he got caught, he tried to lie and spin his way out of it.
Or Trump took them on purpose and was incompetent enough to send some of them to NARA.
Or Trump took them on purpose and purposely sent some of them to NARA so he could play the Deep State/victim card.
Or the right's version of events: The FBI planted them, they aren't really classified, etc. In which case we have yet another conspiracy on our hands. I'm not sure if it's loyalty to Trump or an affinity for conspiracies that makes this version the favorite among neoconservatives.
