F3/port length etc.

Okay so here’s my box question:

The sub I’d like to use has an f3 in a ported box of 22hz. The sealed f3 for a smaller box is a lot higher at 46hz. I listen to a lot of edm and sorta oldschool dub so I’d really like that lowness. However if you think that a sealed box is going to keep things from sounding ‘sloppy’ I guess it would be better to sacrifice some low to keep things tight.
They recommend a 1.5 cu. Ft. enclosure for this sub. However it looks like most boxes at that volume aren’t tuned at a 22hz f3. So would it be better to buy a sealed box of the correct volume and add my own port? I have this equation from 'Car Stereo Cookbook' to get the port dimension/length. Is there a better way to get a properly tuned box? I’m not really trying to build anything I don’t have the time.

That's good book, I used to have it. I think I lost it in a move. F3 is more like an educated guess. F3 or -3db below tuning frequency most of the time isn't realistic. The model for determining that doesn't include the reaction of the box and woofer inside of an enclosed cabin (your car).

Those daytons are more like small home audio woofers. If you want low end daily, maybe tune somewhere from 30 to 34 hz or so. 32 hz is really good for a low end oriented daily. I listen to a ton of EDM, electronic music. I like my boxes tuned in the high 20's, 28-29 hz. You will start to lose Db's above 60 hz or so more steeply at say 28 hz vs 32 hz, usually.

I've designed for these woofers, I can design a box for you if you want.

You could just do a simple 1-1.5 cube box at like 32 hz, I think you'd be happy.

It's so weird that Dayton recommends .5 for the single VC and 1.5 for the DVC. That's like the biggest difference in box sizes for a difference that only seems to really be the coil type. The t/s are different, but idk if they are 3x the box size different, lol.

That sounds good to me. I might have a more ambitious project if you're up to it. I'll email you about it.

I was planning on using the Dayton because I'm looking for 'clean' over 'bang'. Apparently they're better suited for that but still move a lot of air while being somewhat small.

I understand what you're saying about the box tuning. I've linked a box that's tuned for 35hz, which I'm sure would be sufficient, but I think I'd like a bit lower like you mentioned.

35 hz tend to be a little strong on the high end for my personal tastes. There's electronic songs I love that have strong low 30's that I like to hit.

You could try to make the port longer, but there might be other reasons with the box won't extend lower, or even the sub. You'd have to reverse...

While that program is pretty neat, it assumes you know the values. I was just recapping the numbers you provided. RS recommends the following...
