Multiple Capacitors

I have a question: when wiring multiple caps together, do you wire them:

+ to + to amp and each (-) to the ground? or is it + to + to amp and (-) to (-) to gnd?

If you wire capacitors in series, it reduces the total amount of capacitance as a result of increasing the distance between the plates. Wiring in parallel increases the total capacitance.
