Hello All, first time poster, first time visitor here. Normally I post my car questions in car forums, but I thought I would come to the real experts for a stereo question. I'm about to replace the CD head unit in my 2004 Pontiac GTO because the volume knob isn't working right and I can never turn up the volume very well (also, the steering wheel controls are very erratic and usually don't work). My current setup is the stock Blaupunkt unit with in dash 6 CD changer, which is pretty convenient, but 6 discs is only needed because it won't play CD's in mp3 format, just audio discs. So a single disc CD receiver that plays mp3 discs will be fine. It's been a while since I bought an aftermarket stereo, so I don't know who makes good quality or not these days. I'm mainly interested in getting a single-DIN Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood or JVC unit in the $70 to $130 range. All I need this unit to do is play mp3 discs, get great AM/FM reception, and play at least as loud as my stock radio. Any suggestions as to my best choice? Is there much difference between the brands at this price range? thanks in advance for any info!

kenwood x301 like mine is pretty nice $119-$129, 3 5v preouts 24bit da convertor, 13 band eq, xovers, 20 audio settings including seat position with time alignment, car and speakers size, bt, usb and all that 22 x 4rms.. comes with mic so u have hands free phone.. i have 04 grandprix..

I, personally, would recommend going for the Clarion CZ505. It's just a hair out of your budget, but the frustration saved by having the BT mic built into the head unit itself means one less wire to figure out how to run around your car. 4V preouts on 3 channel pairs of RCA, HD Radio, and aptX for your Bluetooth connection help sweeten the deal.

Alternatives that fit your budget would be Alpine's CDE-143BT, Kenwood's KDC-X701 (refurb), or JVC's KD-R970BTS. Each plays a different set of strengths; each carries its own relative sound signature. The JVC and Kenwood will be the most alike to each other and, fwiw, I ran one of JVC's Arsenal series single-DINs for years with great success (it's just not available anymore).

kenwood x301 gets my vote

First off.... Welcome to 2017, you can stream music via bluetooth or put your mp3s on USB to make life easier then mp3 cds lmao..

Tuning is made simple for dummies and the sound quality options are almost limitless, should be decent power as well compared to your stock head unit. If you ever want to add more to your sound system, the head unit is almost future proof as well.

I concur on the Clarion. Happen to own the cz702 which is a step up from the 505. They're hard to find now because of it's discontinuation, but I was able to find a new one on ebay for 120 shipped.

hmmm, that actually could be some great information there, I never thought about moving past the CD era, but apparently you can do that. So, are these "digital media receivers" a good option these days? Do you have to have a usb stick hanging out of your dash, or does the receiver store a certain amount of songs on it's own? When I first looked at these, they kind of looked like cheesy bottom tier units for people who can't afford a real CD receiver, but when I think about it, eliminating the spinning CD in a moving car for solid state data makes sense.

This could be a whole new way of listening to music for me. I haven't even gotten a cell phone yet, but this new-fangled technology seems pretty interesting. Almost like back when I used a couple of speakers from a Radio Shack 8 track home stereo system in the back seat of my 79 Trans Am. Home speakers sound surprisingly good in a car!

the only discs i have in my head unit are pornos LOL all my music is handled by my usb drive which is sitting down in my storage area below the deck connected to the supplied usb extension cord that i popped thru some panels while installing the unit itself

that kenwoods usb extension cord is affixed to the deck, so be careful putting it wherever youre gonna end up with it at. You only get one shot with that one, whereas other ones are detachable and therefore replaceable

oh, and i cant think of any decks that have onboard storage. Ive seen some with micro sd card slots, but thats kinda hokey IMO

this is the last edit to my post, I SWEAR!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Clarion FZ105 digital media receiver - $60 at crutchfield and has SD card slot behind faceplate, plus volume knob instead of buttons. At crutchfield I can add the installation kit with car specific mounting kit, antenna adapter and wiring harness plug for $7.99. The only bad thing I saw was that one reviewer said it had bad radio reception. Any comments on this unit?

The ClarionCZ105BT is very similar to the FZ except that it DOES play cds, and it has an sd slot. It's a little more expensive..but within your price range. I didn't like the idea of giving up the cd player, so my Kenwood also has that capability.

Put the phone down and DRIVE!!

junk for audio super bottom tier head unit horrible cheap unspecified DAC, garbage audio tuning options. again kenwood x301 would be the best.

you want at least a 24 bit dac which helps with actual sound quality right off the bat, 13 band eq so you can actually tune your music perfectly, time alignment to make sure all speaker sound waves reach your ear at the same time to create a virtual sound stage. those are the bare minimum for a good sounding head unit. sorry to say nothing under 99 dollars is worth a sh*t on the market nowadays.

they look cheap and have low prices but the actual quality and technology is WAY above anything old school disk changers can ever hope to compete with on an audio fidelity standpoint. Technology and sound quality standards are way WAAAAAAAY higher nowadays compared to old school days.

I'm only talking about the few select models. There are plenty of garbage head units out there you need to avoid

After extensive comparing of models on Crutchfield, and taking the advice I've gotten here into consideration, I've come to decide the best choice might be the Kenwood KMM-BT318U for $99, with a Sony DSX-A405BT coming in second. The Kenwood unit has the highest RMS power output (22 watts vs 17 for the Sony), 13 channel eq compared to 5 on the Sony, plus the display looks cool and has variable colors. The only thing I didn't like was that the FM sensitivity was second best to the Sony unit (8.2 dBf vs. 7.0 dBf for the Sony). Not sure how significant that is, but I eliminated the Pioneers and Alpines from consideration because their FM sensitivity scores were higher than Kenwood or Sony. I did also like the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X501, but the USB input is in the rear instead of front??? I think I probably will go with the KMM-BT318U - any comments? thanks again!!

Be careful on the power rating of head units. They may be CEA-compliant, but they're not necessarily accurate depictions of how much clean power they'll put out.

That Kenwood KMM is, at least in my opinion, merely "okay" in comparison to the rest. Those 2.5V preouts seem meager at best. If you're powering straight off deck power, your better bet would be this model. Yes, there have been reviews complaining about it having power-on issues, but those have also been reported to be fixed by firmware updates.

Ideally, though, I wouldn't pay much mind at all to a deck's power ratings and, instead, focus on saving up for a separate amplifier. It'll pay off far more in the future.

Any reason you're not a fan of the Clarion?

The clarion seemed to give less for the money you pay - the $110 model had less RMS power per channel, only a 3 band eq and 12 dBf FM sensitivity vs 7 to 8.2 dBf for the Sony's, Kenwood's and also JVC's which I just took a peek at along with checking out clarions.

As far as getting a pre-amp, I'm really not wanting to do that and I want to run off deck power only. I don't like bass, and I think my big factory speakers in back may be partially blown already anyway. I prefer the mid to high range and don't need lots of power for the big speakers, just nice crisp sound at high volume on the vocals and guitar bits. And good FM/AM reception for road trips. The Kenwoods, and Sonys to a lesser extent, seem to be the best for my needs from what I can tell so far.

Signal flow should be HU to DSP to amps. You would lose the ability to EQ and time align the sub with the DSP unit if you bypassed the DSP.

If you can find these in your area. Id recommend these for drop ins. They play from 40Htz on up. Sound very nice on amplified power for premium...

Honestly, beyond what you need. It will do the trick for sure, but it is excessive. Not a bad thing, just more than you will ever need. No need...
