Also, I'm not sure about what the actual percentage is of LCD vs. CRT monitor usage, but I would imagine it's a pretty even split nowadays, so the question remains ? Is Google's black page really saving any energy ?

black still takes energy to produce... it is all still light. its not like they just turn off that side of the screen.

My point is:

CRTs consume less energy when displaying black compared to white.

LCDs consume more energy when displaying black compared to white.

If more people are using LCD than CRT, then Google's black page could potentially result in an increase in global power consumption.
