A couple days ago I went to a new Guitar Center that opened up near by to buy some new strings for my acoustic. So I was just browsing around and i went into the 1 of the studio rooms. They had a variety of monitors over there. I was listening to a couple of them I really didnt like the tonality. One of the employees ask me if I was interested in buying a set of monitors, i told him that i am intrested in buying all the time. He played me all of the sets they had, I wasn't really thrilled with most of them they had. He advised me on a set of Yamaha NS10s(told me to look on ebay and whatnot), apparently they discontinued them because of the cone was made from a now extinct tree he said, also he said they sound very "reproduced"...as in clear. I told him that i would do some research and check them out.

I started looking on google about these drivers, i'm reading and majority of the knowledgeable people say they **** & and that they are too peaky and harsh as well as they dont extend lower than 80hz. Also read some comments like "if you can mix on these monitors they will sound good on any"....

Anybody have had experiences with them? seems like just an Hype.

ps: sorry for such a long post, but i thought the back story might be of use

Monitors are usually 'overprocessed' and not in a good way. Honestly, even if you are looking for mastering monitors you would be better off looking into a good set of bookshelf speaker from many of the home audio manufactures. Bowers Wilkins DM-602S3, Wharfedale Diamond 9.2 or Evo 2-8, Castle Richmond 3i, Nbien DX-5, or Q Acoustics 1050 would all be better choices. Maybe even a lower end Monitor Audio would be better.

Are you looking for something specific?

After doing some looking around you DON'T want NS10s...

THEY ARE GOD AWFUL!!! I didn't know what they were until I saw the pictures. STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THOSE SPEAKERS AS YOU CAN!!!

PS. To the guy who said "if you can mix on these". That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Your mix reference monitors should be as flat and as clean as gods own stereo, because otherwise you are just mixing for the crappy monitors imperfections and not for the music...

yeah that guy made them sound like GOLD...lol

after reading around I was like what is this guy thinking...so thats why i thought I should post up here to have reassurance.

oh to answer your earlier question, I am looking to purchase some nice monitors for listening to music on the computer while reading the boardz or working on whatver. these logitechs(x530s) arent cutting it anymore for me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Not having a budget can get you into trouble... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif that is how I have 15k spent....

i remember first starting off wanting a 42" tv that was $1500 ended up spending $3,500 on a 60"

then thining of getting a receiver which i wanted to spend $300 on bought a htib that was $400 didnt like it then bought a blu ray player that was $1000 and then an hd-dvd player that was $450 then sold the blu ray player... and then was wanting some 800d b&w but no way could i afford those so i ended up getting my def techs that where $3,400 and then going into the magnolia store wanting a denon 2307 but ended up buying a $1000 2807 and then buying a ps3 which was $650 plus a stupid $30 hdmi cable. and also a $250 logitech remote and last but not least a rotel rmb 1095 for $1500. still need surrounds and a tv stand (awaiting brother so i can use his best buy card and get no interest //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif )

Try 3k for a processor

1k for a stereo amp

1k for a CD Player

1k for a SACD/DVD-A/V Player

300 for another DVD Player

Don't even want to talk about how much on speakers and cables and the Turntable....

Yes and No... It depends more on the rest of the driver. If the driver starting out is high distortion then it won't make much difference, but if it is a low distortion then the cone will help eleminate standing waves and other color issues that occur in paper/pulp drivers.

Yes, I know it's BOSE, but this is old school stuff... before they got all crazy with EQing and whatnot:

I've got a pair of those back home, and they're surprisingly solid speakers for what they are. I think they sound very nice, smooth and natural. They don't cost an arm and a leg, either. They probably won't compare to the likes of the stuff B&W's mentioning, though.
