see I think thats what scares me about it. I dont want it to dominte lower end and then fall off fast up top. I think for a sub to be considered musical it has to play well up to the Xover freq.

1400 RMS enough to go small sealed?

What xover frequency? Should a sub only be considered musical if it plays to your xover, and you have your xover set at 150hz? First of all, I do not recommend running a XXX unless you have a good midbass setup. You dont want to run the XXX above 80hz or so, but in the proper setup, you really shouldn't need to. But this is not an ideal world, and many people want to rely on their subwoofer for the lower midbass regions, rather than dedicated midbass drivers. If that's the case, I wouldn't look at XXX's (or W7's or Brahmas). But if you do have a good midbass setup, any of those subs will perform very well at 80hz and below. IMO low-end extension is more important to a subwoofer's SQ abilites than is its upper freq extension. But like I said, ultimately it comes down to your specific setup, your specific needs and your specific goals.
As for dominating, that's all in tweaking the system. Run a front stage consisting of some 5-1/4's off a 50watt amp, and a 15" supersub off 1500 watts (for example), I dont care how 'musical' the subwoofer is, the system wont blend for crap and the over-all performance will be poor (over powering bass). A good sounding sub stage is not made by simply picking a great sub and building the perfect box, its also by matching speaker outputs, power needs, etc etc in order for the system to blend properly. most people who complain about the bass being over powering is due to a poorly blended system, not something specifically wrong with the sub setup.

Im not suggesting the XXX over the eD A series. I have no experience with the A's so I cannot give an accurate comparison. Im simply trying to clear up the misconception that XXX's perform poorly sealed.

^^^Understood, and I should have said up to a typical xover such as 70-80 hz.

I have the EF-61CFi/drt26 and 230 RMS per side. This setup is fine to 70-75 hz, and has great midbass.

By dominating I just meant I was unsure how flat it would play up to say, 70-80 hz.

Sure you can EQ that all out, but having something flat to start with is easier to tweak imo.

I guess I meant to say proper "balance"

Most of what you are talking about, frequency response, is much more dictated by the enclosure design and alignment than by the raw driver itself. But yes, any of the subs mentioned here will have no problem extending up to the 70-80hz region while still retaining their SQ. Its above that where some of them start having trouble. And its at the bottom end that differences would be most noticeable (again mostly dictated by installation).
I know Im being vague, sorry, but alot of this stuff is dependant on the specific installation and/or vehicle.

nah....its cool man I know what you were saying. thanks for the help.

I think imma go with the XXX //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

in my box my 15 is not really to punchy but it dominates lowend, but it still sounds good on rock music if you set the eq a little different, a sealed box would prolly be better for rock than a ported though if your not wanting to get really loud
funny, mine in its ported box kicks in the chest really hard with metal and rock. its extremely punchy when it needs to be and also hits low as hell.

though it is in a snail shell, perhaps that is why.

You're going to need a very high Qtc enclosure to run 1.4kW on the A. In fact, it doesn't need anywhere near that amount of power...dial it back to 1kW and make it last.

Oh, and where are you getting the A from? Because if you don't get it, I may //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Ran the XXX through winsid and 1.0002 cubes gives me a Q of 7.

I have decided on the XXX however if you are seriously interested PM me and I'll point you in the right direction, my buddie selling it is online now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I owned both, and did some side by side listening in the 15" version.

Simply put, the A doesn't have jack shit on the XXX. XXX spanked the A in EVERY aspect, even in a smaller ported box (2.75 ported tuned to 30).
